Minutes for the CTLA Meeting of January 28, 2012

Jeremy Dunn spoke about:

Social Gathering: will take place at Connie’s on Halsted at 4:00pm (February 2nd)

* Thanks to Andrea Hetzke, former librarian that wrote a book on book club activities: Book Club: 25 Activities for Any Reading Discussion. She donated it the Professional Library Collection. (Her book was published through Upstart)

Battle of the Books is still on and in full swing, thanks Dorsey.

Paul Griffin

His titles include: Ten Mile River, The Orange Houses, Stay with Me

He lives and writes in New York City.

His novel, The Orange Houses, was an ALA Best Book for Young Adults Top Ten, an International Reading Association 2010 Notable Book for a Global Society, a Chicago Public Library's Best of the Best Book of 2009, and an Amelia Bloomer Project Award winner.

Ms. Griffin did a read a loud. Afterwards he discussed how he does school talks.

He tells students that he understands where they come from.

Speaks to students about walking away when angry, how to deal with emotional situations.

Mr. Griffin also shared a letter from a student that said how he felt comfortable telling him how he was feeling emotionally.

Mr. Griffin thanks librarians because they bring people like him to schools and they are the connecting blocks to books that students can relate to.

How do you manage to stay relevant to young people?
