Minutes for the CTLA Meeting of November 14, 2007
Kori Kubitz and Jo Ann Flournoy hosted our November CTLA meeting at the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame, located 1431 W. Taylor Street. The reception hour was 4:30 in the exhibit hall. Dinner and meeting at 5:30pm in the upstairs banquet room. Kori Kubitz thanked everybody for coming and introduced everyone at her table, including her family. She put together for us "What's New in Our World for School Libraries". She reviewed some of their publishers, shared some new releases, highlighted some web site features, and shared some other new resources. You may visit Capstone Publishing Companies and Rosen Publishing at www.capstonepress.com and www.rosenpublishing.com both companies are CPS approved strategic source vendors. She stated that Capstone Press including their sister companies Picture Window, Compass Point, Stone Arch Books as well as Rosen Publishing Group are actual publishers of the best known school library books in the industry today. Capstone Press is known for its nonfiction books. Rosen Publishing has high interest books and books for middle school and young adult. PowerKids Press is K-6th grade. All of their companies have free shipping and processing. A goodie bag was given to every attending member along with a book titled "Amazing Grace" by Mary Hoffman. Other items were raffled off.
Announcements and an exchange of ideas were shared: Marge Fashing attended the AASL conference in Reno late October. She furnished copies of her favorite Internet sites she received from Annette Lamb and Larry Johnson at the conference sessions and also a poem, which was read by Rita Dawkins at the CTLA meeting of May 9, 1992. Title and author unknown. She stated, before you weed your library books, check to see if it is out of print and if it is wanted by some one else. She is retired from CPS and hopes that someone else considers the role of Historian. This wealth of information is posted on the News Page of our website. Ann Adams read thank you cards from Melva Samuels, Woodra Scott and the retirees of the Department of Libraries for the celebration we gave in their honor.
Eddie reported an ending balance of $4,326.97 as of October 31. Charlie Gunn reminded us that we can sign up and pay our membership on-line. Just visit our web site and that the 28th Annual Children’s Literature Conference will be March 14-15, 2008. This is a workshop connecting boys and books given by the Holmes Student Center of Northern Illinois University in Dekalb, Illinois. Dr. Gayles Evans, long-time CTLA member and Director of the Chicago State University's Library Science and Communications Media Dept. will be retiring in December. Her retirement party will be Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008 from 11:30am-4:30pm (with lunch starting at 1:30) at: Chateau Bu Sche, 11535 S. Cicero, Alsip. Tickets are $35 payable by Dec. 15. The Department of Libraries informed us that Matching Grant applications are due Friday, November 30th. Reports from the Library card campaign are due by December 4.
