Our first meeting was again hosted by Rainbow Books at the Marriott at Medical District/UIC on September 26. Marlene Targ Brill was our guest speaker. Above, she (holding pen) is joined by (left to right) Larry Klaber, Rainbow Books rep., Tatiana Novy, CTLA Pres., Mark Sherman, Rainbow Books Pres., K. C. Boyd, CPS Area Librarian, and Mickey Simmons, Rainbow Books rep. Above left and below, Marlene discusses her life as a writer after being a special education teacher in Chicago in the '70s. She has written 67 books in non-fiction and historical fiction for ages pre-school to adult, including Barack Obama: President for a New Era. At left, CTLA President Tatiana Novy and her newlywed husband Jerome (also a teacher) get their signed copy along with everyone present. Below left, K. C. Boyd gives the CPS DLIS report with important announcements listed on our News Page, including their great Professional Library. Right below, Rainbow Books President Mark Sherman addresses everyone present and proudly states that orders may now be placed on CPS' on-line Oracle punch-out system. To the right of Mark are his two Chicago area reps.: Larry and Mickey.

Our second meeting was hosted by Follett Library Services in the UIC Student Union East Tower on October 24, which included a big breakfast buffet. Above, Chicago account managers Melissa Smith, Andy Larson, and Derrek Lyons are joined by Tatiana Novy, CTLA Pres., and Connie Amon, CPS Area Librarian. Connie provided Dept.news and info. Derrek unveiled Follett's redesigned TitleWave website (below), which goes public in November. The new design was based on customer feedback and retains its custom links to CPS pricing and booklists. At left, Andy announces Follett's exclusive partnership with LeapFrog products and their Tag reader pen. Andy also played his quiz show game!

Kori Kubitz (holding mic in front of pillar) and Associates hosted our November meeting at Connie's Italian Restaurant for a Thursday evening meeting to kick-off the holiday season and many ways to think green! Besides holiday color and saving money as green themes, Kori asked us all to save the earth and keep our land green and safe. We were all treated to a full italian-favorite dinner, including freshly-baked desserts, with plenty of spirits. As always, everyone was given a bag (earth-friendly tote bag) full of books plus a raffle ticket to win generous prizes! As seen below, Kori had a projector and Karoake machine for AV fun!
Above, Tatiana Richardson, CTLA Pres, conducts the business meeting. To her right, K. C. Boyd, Area Librarian, represents DLIS with greetings and news. Next to K. C., Kori shows a dazzling PowerPoint of her product line, including Capstone. At right is new member Melanie Ferrand, who was a double winner. She won a raffle prize from the raffle table (pictured to the right), which included a tote bag "One Earth, One Person, One Chance". She also met the former retired librarian Nancy Skiersch from her new school Pickard Elementary! Thanks to the meeting, they have united to bridge the last 20 years with the next 20 years! Thanks to Kori for providing the opportunity!

Maureen Arthur and Gerry Torrence of Heinemann Raintree hosted our December meeting at Pompei Restaurant on Taylor St. We celebrated the holiday season and learned about this great publisher for non-fiction titles. Everyone was given a full-color 300 page 2009-10 catalog for grades PK-12. Maureen showcased catalog sample books in the photo below. Gerry (pictured above) also informed us about affordable whiteboard options, such as skins for old chalkboards and eBeam products by Luidia for making a whiteboard into a 'smartboard'. Everyone was treated to a delicious buffet breakfast along with a raffle drawing.

Guest speakers (above) were beloved Gwen Hilary, storyteller extraordinaire, and her colleague Enoch Williamson, performing artist, who shared holiday stories with a message of hope, peace and earth care!

Children's Plus, Inc. hosted our January meeting at Maggiano's Restaurant on Grand St. and treated everyone to a wedding style luncheon with a three-course meal, a nationally recognized speaker, and the whole paperback bookset of Bluford Series plus an additional copy of Schooled demonstrating their lifetime binding and signed by Paul Langan. Paul came from Philadelphia just for our event to address us and visit Chicago for the first time. Paul (below right and on bottom row) serves as editor and part author and announced that the Bluford Series will expand from 15 titles to 20 titles in the next year or so through Townsend Press, which is fully represented by Children's Plus. Paul, like Children's Plus, firmly believe that books matter and that: 'When books ignore kids, then kids will ignore books.' Paul stated that: "There is power in writing. The power to create your world, a world that is authentic and relevant with real topics." Paul wants his readers to be informed citizens and develop mental muscle with his affordable books!
At left is Jim Meredith, the Sales Manager, introducing himself. Above, K. C. Boyd, Area Librarian and joined by Tatiana Richardson, said almost all Matching Grant apps. were approved.

Paul stayed until every copy of Schooled was signed and sealed!
